Corrosion & Wear
Corrosion and Wear investigates the breakdown of engineered materials due to factors such as exposure, strain and weakness caused by the manufacturing process. Research in this area not only involves defining the causes of materials failure, but finding solutions to prevent it.
Drs. Reg Eadie and Weixing Chen recently developed a passivation/acid immersion technique used to produce pits free
from deformation or residual stress on X-52 pipeline steel samples. Pits have been found to be a common source of crack initiation and the experimental procedure would prove useful in research in crack initiation.
