Research areas: Materials manufacturing of microalloyed and low alloyed steels for pipelines and SAGD applications; alloy powders and rapid solidification; spray deposition; metal-matrix composites; recycling of metals, alloys and composites.


The main thrust of Henein's research at UofA develop stronger, higher performance alloys, using innovative processes and products that are cost-effective, sustainable, and meet demands for reduced green house gas emissions. His research using integrated computational methods has led to the development and manufacture of the first X100 steel grade in North America for linepipe applications. This greatly improves performance, corrosion, weldability and use in cold weather applications. For the development of stronger lighter weight transportation vehicles, Henein, in collaboration with international colleagues in France and Germany, has developed quantitative and verified simulations of rapidly solidified microstructures of aluminum copper, aluminum nickel and D2 tool steel alloys under diffusion limited conditions. These are important during development and control of strip casting, metal powder production and strip casting. These techniques lead to refined microstructures and higher performance alloys. Therefore, for a given application, we use less material, is more recyclable and requires less energy to produce. The design and execution of microgravity experiments forms a critical component to this research activity. Henein’s research has also developed a novel and innovative technique to simultaneously measure three physical properties of fluids: surface tension, density and viscosity. In collaboration with the Polish Academy of Sciences, the technique termed Discharge Crucible, has been used extensively to measure the properties of a wide range of pure metals and alloys.
